You are the Expert

I believe that YOU are the only one who can truly heal yourself.

Yes, you heard that right.

And I know that’s not what you’ve been told, and maybe it isn’t what you want to hear.

I sure as heck don’t like being reminded that I’m in charge of my life…especially when things aren’t going as well as I would like.

Disempowering messages are all around us.

Are you in pain? Take this pill.

Got in a fight with your girlfriend? Have a drink.

Hurt your back? Take this pill and then have surgery.

What do these recommendations have in common?

They are all about numbing the pain rather than listening to it.

They are all about looking outside of yourself rather than inside of yourself.

AND! Let’s be real – there are times when the above choices are indeed just what we need!

But! I’m also so happy to hear more and more of my clients telling me that their doctor recommended yoga, acupuncture or massage rather than opioids or surgery.

Did you know that low back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide according to the Global Burden of Disease?

And it is one of the most common reasons for missed work.

In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office and afflicts a quarter of Americans.

Here’s what’s really exciting: WE as a society are realizing we have options. There are so many ways we can take care of ourselves in a holistic and revolutionary way.

You are the ultimate expert on your body. There’s no shame in taking pain killers or having surgery when you decide you really need it. I have seen people who needed that direct intervention and have benefited tremendously from it.

What I’m asking is that you give yourself a little time, check out all of your options and, above all, trust yourself.

I call myself a Movement Therapist, but really, I’m an interpreter. I help to translate the information your body is communicating to you into actionable results.

Very few of us really know how to listen to our bodies. Building a relationship with the body takes practice, patience and perseverance. Keep at it and trust that every moment you spend with your body is one moment closer to feeling better.

And most important of all, remember that YOU are the expert.
