Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act
On December 23, 2022, the Fiscal Year 2023 Spending Bill was approved by Congress to support the federal government through September 30, 2023. The “Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act,” which was included by lawmakers, has crucial features that will help the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) better enforce its regulations of cosmetic and personal care items.
Beautycounter’s goal has always been to put safer products in everyone’s hands.
I joined Beautycounter’s team because I’m passionate about my health, my family’s health and my neighbor’s health, and frankly, I found it shocking and totally ridiculous that there wasn’t more oversight on the beauty industry.
Most companies want less oversight and regulations on their industry. Not Beautycounter. Working along Beautycounter since 2020 has opened my eyes to the geopolitical, environmental and human rights issues associated with my purchases.
Currently, the regulation of cosmetics in the United States is governed by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), which was enacted in 1938. The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act would make significant changes to the FD&C Act, including:
- Requiring cosmetic companies to register their products with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
- Requiring the FDA to review and approve new ingredients before they can be used in cosmetics.
- Requiring the FDA to establish a database of all ingredients used in cosmetics and make it available to the public.
- Allowing the FDA to recall cosmetics products that are found to be unsafe or misbranded.
- Establishing penalties for companies that violate cosmetics regulations.
The goal of the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act is to improve the safety of cosmetics products and provide consumers with greater transparency and information about the products they use.
To my Beautycounter clients – THANK YOU! Together, we were able to enact the most significant revision to the Federal Cosmetic Safety Act since 1938.
