How your gut influences your hormones

“All disease begins in the gut.”

Hippocrates

In my opinion, the way we practice medicine in the United States and many other industrialized countries is ass-backwards. I’ve spent a lot of time wondering and researching about why this might be. I suspect it comes down to two things: time and money.

Holistic healing takes time, money and a lot of patience. As a society we are always in a rush and are used to quick fixes.

If we don’t see a result within a few months, we give up. We conclude it’s not working, and we keep consuming other information in hopes we might find our way.

I deeply support my client’s intuition. You’ve got to know when to change course, and you have to know when to work through the struggles to find your way to the other side.

When my clients come to me with symptoms of hormone imbalances I know that the first thing we must do is check on the gut.

Why is the gut so important to hormones?

Digestive dysfunction (bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea), imbalanced gut flora and key markers like the beta glucosidase enzyme can have dramatic effects on hormone balance.

One of the biggest contributing factors to dysregulated hormones is liver dysfunction.

The liver is the body’s detoxification workhorse and is key to metabolism, nutrient absorption, blood sugar balance and immune system function. The health of the liver is intimately connected to the balance and function of the entire gastrointestinal system.

The hormonal system is a finely tuned orchestra, and when the gut is struggling, hormones have a harder time being created and eliminated which causes old hormones to be recirculated into the system and leads to life-altering imbalances.

“Here is the truth: your body is in no way betraying you. In fact, your hormones hold the key to an incredible life.”

Hormones: Mood, Weight & Energy

Do you struggle with any of these symptoms?

  • weight gain
  • fatigue
  • anxiety/depression
  • breast tenderness
  • infertility
  • blood sugar imbalances
  • constant hunger
  • mood swings
  • sleep issues
  • lack of motivation
  • irregular cycle, lack of cycle or increased bleeding
  • bloating
  • headaches
  • acne
  • low libido
  • bladder control
  • vaginal dryness / discomfort

Hormones have a direct impact on all of these symptoms.

An increase in estrogen or testosterone, for instance, can make it nearly impossible to lose weight.

A lack of progesterone can make sleep nearly impossible, and you might find yourself wide awake at 2am!

High cortisol can affect your bones and cause weight to hang around your midsection.

If the adrenals are struggling, you might feel anxious and stressed out for no apparent reason.

But, none of these issues can be resolved without first addressing the foundation of the human body – the gut!
